FEMALE EMPOWERMENT: Tone Emblemsvåg poses with her mural
To the rescue for American sign painting
Face2face cheers for the tradition of this often overlooked art form. And with the fortune of having the Norwegian face of the discipline, with background as both a sign-designer and painter, our Head of Design Tone was invited to The Pre-Vinylette Society in Chicago – The gathering for female sign-painters from all around the world. The purpose was to shed a light on this lost form of communication.
The making of signs can be traced back to even before written languages were developed, and has always been a way of telling stories and passing on good advice, do’s and dont’s.
Now this tradition of sign making is making a comeback with the help of friends worldwide. With only one school left in the USA to offer students to learn the trade, this fine tradition is in the danger of being eradicated.
I addition female sign makers are having difficulty entering the business which has a history of being male dominated.
To assert a woman’s rightful place in the sign-painting business, a gathering of women who knows how to handle the trade was held In Chicago. The result was an inspiring exhibition with a vibrant display of over 60 women sign painters from nine countries around the world.
